Alpine nature and the Bavarian lifestyle

In his day, Bavaria’s own fairytale king, Ludwig II, sought happiness in the mountains. He especially enjoyed visiting the region where the Isar flows between the Zugspitze and Karwendel mountains toward Munich – today’s Alpenwelt Karwendel.

Nestled amid this spectacular natural alpine landscape are the three towns of Mittenwald, Krün, and Wallgau. The Upper Bavarian lifestyle is undiluted here.

The Alpenwelt Karwendel area offers three different kinds of hiking. Down in the valley, there are species-rich rolling meadows and the pasturelands lining the banks of the Isar to explore. The river runs wild here, meandering and changing course as it pleases and forming a home for rare animals and plants. At higher, moderate altitudes, hikers can visit huts and vista points, and higher still, climbing routes take hikers and climbers to more than eight peaks topping 2000 meters.

Families with children can enjoy the many themed trails, such as the barefoot hiking trail, the Ghost Gorge, and the fairytale trail. Adventurous spirits can explore the Isar nature experience route, and walkers can enjoy a gentler path through the rolling meadows.

The good old Kranzberg chairlift or modern Karwendel cable car help to shorten some ascents.

In all, some 750 kilometers of routes await, guaranteeing a diverse range of options for hikers, climbers, and walkers alike.

Frozen lakes, the winter sun, snowy rolling meadows… the landscape here in Upper Bavaria is simply magical, and maintained hiking trails are a true pleasure even in the winter.
