The museum was founded in 1930 and since 1960 it has been housed in one of the most beautiful and oldest buildings of Mittenwald. The Violin Building Museum is one of the most important cultural and historic museums in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The exhibits illustrate the trade of violin building and a tradition of more than three centuries tied to the history of the town of Mittenwald.
The extensive collection of high quality instruments focuses on violin building in Mittenwald starting with the Baroque period all the way to the workshops of today. The exhibition additionally features auditory and olfactory samples, historical movies and a look-and-see workshop where you can watch craftsmen at work.
